I've installed a small radial mixing fan toward the top blowing down (heat rising); I drilled 6 holes in the top with close-able caps to balance the heat and gauge a temperature against moisture content. I have a Lignomatic moisture meter cable into a piece of spruce from the panel to monitor MC/EMC. The heat source is a contained oil radiator in the back of the box. The whole system is highly indexable. The fans, by the way, are available cheaply in places like American Science supply and are easily wired to a plug. I don't know the voltage or fuse requirement of the small fans you're talking about, but I would guess that 12 volt won't run them, and there has to be a fuse in the line somewhere.
