Yes, 3/8", but you could get away with a smaller diameter. On the keys with the beech inserts, I cut 1/4" plugs with a short cutter and stacked them in the hole. This will be a new piano, so I wanted to cover my tracks as much as possible and also didn't want the capstan screwing into the glue seam, thus the 3/8". You could still buy a 1/4" plug cutter (not tapered) and stack the plugs into the hole: http://woodworker.com/cgi-bin/FULLPRES.exe?PARTNUM=908-386&search=Plug%20Cutter.

The plugs look like 3/8. I that so? I've avoided using that diameter for fear of it not leaving enough of the key. That would allow me to use a 3/8 tenon cutter which I have. As stated earlier there seems to be no 1/4 tenon cutter available. I'm also thinking a larger plug might allow for an easier time of re-drilling.

Here is another approach for keys that already have hardwood inserts. This is one of my 275's where the factory accidentally began boring holes for the capstans, unfortunately in the wrong place. The inserts are beech, so I cut beech plugs to match.
