I don't think you're going to have any significant
friction at the capstan with a reasonable action geometry. A badly misshapen
whippen heal will of course tell another story. I saw in an earlier post you had
no problem when pushing the back of the key down. Sound like you need weight in
the back, along with proper key easing. Maybe that's just too easy.

Seems to me talked about this once and
someone recommended putting something on top of the capstan, like plumbers'
tape just see if that was the problem. Play a bunch of times and
see if it helps? Diagnosis...you could always replace the wippen
felt on one wippen as an experiment...teflon powder should adhere well to
wippen cushions...

David Ilvedson, RPT
Pacifica, CA 94044

I have noticed, of coarse, when I keep the back
of the key down, the wippen returns with a fury. Alsow after
easing and sizing the key, it too works just fine. My problem, I
think, is where the two come together. My wonder about lubing the
capstan felt is that it hangs down so powder lube does not cling to the felt
very long with continue pounding of the capstan.
