<html> <head> <META HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Type" CONTENT="text/html; charset=us-ascii"> <meta name=Generator content="Microsoft Word 10 (filtered)"> <style>  </style> </head> <body lang=EN-US link=blue vlink=purple> <div class=Section1> Daniel, I just went through this and it has happened to me with a set of brand new hammer butts.  I am never too anxious to go through this again and especially with new butts.    In my little upright the butt leathers had stretched and the let-off and dip was not okay and the neither was the key leveling or the capstan/lost motion. Couldn’t be regulated.   I took one butt out of the worst area of blubbering and undid the top spot of glue.  Then I stretched out and reglued the butt leather.  Check for grooves and ridges, and see that the under cushions are not going to leave you with a big bump.  I had to trim off a bit of one piece because it just extended too far.  On the new butts the under felt was too soft and the leather stretched in no time.   When the butts are loose you can’t get the keys leveled or the capstans adjusted and the jacks won’t return properly unless there is a big-terrible for the butts gap.   Try one it might work.   Jessica Masse RPT Piano Technicians Guild   </div> </body> </html>
