Hey - I'm the craziest! Actually, my justification
for buying a motorcycle was to evaluate whether I would find riding one around
in local traffic tolerable before I dug into building an electric motorcycle.
I've seen two electric motorcycles similar to the Zero, but oriented more for
the street - but both are in the $12K range. This Zero motorbike looks pretty
good - although I wish it were more street oriented. I wonder how well it would
compare to my motorcycle as a piano service vehicle.

Be aware that the range of these electric vehicles
are usually based on speeds of 25 mph or less. Usually, if it is ridden at 50
mph or so, the range really tanks. But hey - maybe one could ride it to
appointments within a 10 to 20 mile radius - if you could plug it in while
tuning a piano, you'd be all set. I'm glad to see that someone is making an
electric motorcycle for $7,500.

You've tapped the nerve of a hyper-hypermiler! Our

second is a Toyota Prius that has averaged 53 mpg over
two-and-a-half-years - we bought it new for about $25K (as far as a car
goes, I love it!). The third vehicle is a 2002 Yamaha 650 V Star Classic
motorcycle that I bought 8 months ago for $2,900 - it only had 1,050
miles on it and was in near-showroom condition. My average fuel mileage
for the first 8 months has been 55 mpg. Recently (like a week ago) I
put an "air kit", an open exhaust sytem on it and a taller rear tire that
reduces the overall gear ratio and got an honest 65 mpg on my last tank. I
suspect with some hypermiling techniques I will be able to push that up to
70 mpg.

hypermiling? (OT?)

So has anyone tried "hypermiling" yet? I figure with all
the time we spend on the road in our profession, it might be of interest
here. I can't afford the downpayment on a Prius just now, and
unfortunately my better half is too worried to agree to entertain the
thought of a motorcycle for work. I drive a manual transmission PT
Cruiser, and with gas prices the way they're going, the topic of
hypermiling was quite interesting. So far I'm getting 31mpg in the city
now, just by doing a bunch of coasting and slower thoughtful driving.
Given that I'm due for an oil change, a tuneup, tire rotation and who
knows what else, I was impressed. The perk on top of that is a big
reduction in stress, not to mention the increased safety. I guess I
didn't realize how much stress I put on myself by rushing around driving
fast! Does anyone want to discuss?

-Holly Quigley
Ticking off
