hammer return springs on a Steinway console several weeks ago. The touch is on
the heavy side, but not unplayable. Even though everything works
"right", on soft blows, the jack isn't going back under. The
keys are eased, the wippens and not sluggish, the hammer flanges are not
tight, and the jacks return when the keys comes up all the way, and But
on a medium fast repetition, the jack doesn't come back under, and the
hammer butt gets caught on the back check. Would weakening the
return springs help this? Or is there something else I should be looking for. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

addressed this in class. A too strong hammer return spring can overpower the returning
jack. I would first check the jack pining, jack springs and condition of the
butt leather and smoothness of jack tops. Also having the hammers check closer
to the strings can give the jack more room to return. Capstan-whippen cushion friction
and maybe even spoons digging into the damper levers could be worth a look. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
