I mention using a set of Steinway or Ronsen Bacon felt hammers as a practice set. I’ve been made aware that the most recent version of the Ronsen Bacon hammer is somewhat firmer than it was before and requires little (some say none) lacquer. I have found for those not interested in using Steinway hammers for whatever reason (myself included) that the Ronsen Bacon Felt hammer has been a very good substitute with very similar consistency and tone quality. If the current iteration is much firmer then one would have to adjust the strength of the solution accordingly.
