<DIV>Hi, JD:</DIV>
<DIV> Well, if I were to guess, I would say whatever is used to secure the rail is probably veneered over. You might take a small peen hammer and tap around on the bar to see if there are voids where the screws are underneath. These pianos aren't very common over here, so I don't know what kind of joinery might be lurking underneath the surface. It's hard to tell whether the finish is separate on the bar from the lid surface or finished with the bar in place. That might give a clue as to the separability of the two. No use trying to remove it if it's going to ruin the finish more than leaving it alone. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> Good luck!</DIV>

<DIV>Here is a picture of the lockrail attached to the top front half on my 1870 Brinsmead concert grand.</DIV>
<DIV><BR></DIV>
<DIV>I have tried hammering both ends of the lockrail to see if it's fitted with key-plates but there's no hint of movement. I need to get it off to do a proper polishing job and I can't work out how it's attached.</DIV>
<DIV><BR></DIV>
<DIV>If you look at the bottom of the picture you will see there is a thin strip between the lock rail and the moulding. This is a separate part from the lock rail proper and probably holds the secret of how the rail is attached.</DIV>
<DIV><BR></DIV>
<DIV>Any ideas? I think it most unlikely that it is simply glued on.</DIV>
