David -

That's what I was doing until recently, but the last couple I just
"recapped" the guide rails, as I saw being done out at Oberlin a few
years ago. New cap material is available at my local Lowes in the
form of 1/8" maple strips in 2' & 4' lengths a little wider than
necessary. Bandsaw off the old tops and glue the new blanks on, saw
to correct width, scribe a line back 1/4" from the front edge. Clamp
in place in the piano and punch centers on the scribed line between
the string unisons, drill to match your chosen cloth (I use 3/16"
holes) & countersink the top and bottom of the holes.
Countersinking both ends means no gluing is necessary, making future
rebushing a snap. Sizing liquid can be alcohol, profelt or liquid
teflon.

This method does require much more damper wire-bending than
when rebushing the old rails, but it also allows for correcting
problems with the original hole spacing and location relative to the
underlevers below. Also, since Steinway is selling new damper heads
with felt and wires attached (for less than I can strip, clean &
refelt the old heads), I find it easier to start from scratch with
the wire bending anyway.

Happy damping,
use the thick English bushing cloth (1.8mm) that I get from
Pianotek in bulk. I size the holes with the appropriate
bridge pin and alcohol after sanding and the coating the
guide rail with shellac (I use rattle can shellac). No glue
necessary and trying to do two layers of cloth isn’t
either. I keep the 1.8 mm cloth in stock and cut to the
appropriate width. If the guide rail holes are too small
then drill the old bushings out with the drill bit that
gives you the correct diameter. Removing them that way is
a lot faster and easier as well.
