Many different temperament sequences work just fine. Whether
you build a temperament from C or from <br>
A depends on which fork you decide to use. <br>
<br>
Choosing an octave in the middle of the keyboard makes the
beats easier to hear, but which octave is <br>
chosen is an arbitrary decision. People customarily use just
one temperament sequence because they <br>
get so familiar with it. Sequences using thirds and sixths
along with fourths and fifths, <br>
instead of ONLY fourths and fifths, tend to be more accurate.
The faster-beating intervals act <br>
like a vernier adjustment, and more tests are possible if one
gets stuck. But acceptable work <br>
can still be produced with a fourths-and-fifths temperament
given good ears and a lot of practice. <br>

If you are familiar with the intervals and beat rates and how
they relate to each other, you <br>
can start on any note and end up with the same result. <br>
