I might get some 1/8" dowel, as you suggest, nice idea. But even
if I had had it today, I suppose i'd have had to drill a pilot
hole in it, and I didn't have any fine drill bits with me (or,
indeed, a drill!). The simpler option would ha vebeen to fit a
new hammer butt, and I am going to order some this week so as not
to be caught out again. There was also a split wippen flange, but
I had suitable flanges with me.<br>

just drilling an 1/8" hole across the butt, slightly below the
surface, at<br>
the plate screw site and insert a piece of 1/8" dowel with
Titebond III.<br>
This will give you cross grain to anchor the screw into. (sounds
more<br>
complicated than it actually is.<G>)<br>
