What Dean described is one way of doing it. I went once as a kid, but wasn't stupid enough to put my hand in a hole in the bank. I was told that snakes can be in the holes too. If a hole is "cold," it's either uninhabited or has a snake in it.<div>

They do this in a big state lake, and mark their boxes (somehow--not sure of all the details since I'm not into that thing).</div>
