The best way I've found to soften damper felt is to install new ones.
But in a pinch, I've had some success with steam to get rid of a slight
buzz.

I just sold someone a very nicely preserved 1951
JC Fischer console ( "American" consoles from the 50's
are my favorites !!! ) All in great shape except the
dampers, which are rattling on the strings.
I vaguely remember "chatter" about softening them
instead of replacing them. How is this done?
Thanks in Advance,

Likely a great idea - for grand pianos in churches
and lounges - might help
repel the onslaught of red wine in churches and
martinis/beer/etc. in lounge
pianos - 'course, maybe martinis in some
churches......
As Jimmy Buffet said: "It's a fine line between
Saturday night and Sunday
mornin'".
Seriously though, anyone that sprays WD40 on a set
of hammers should be
shot.
