<html> Ned, I think this depends on the computer.  Some computers have a bit of hard disk or fan noise that feeds loudly though the case into the microphone, while others are quiet and don't interfere. Another advantage of an external microphone is that it gives a bit more freedom of placement for the computer.  I have a large screen on my computer, so for uprights I set it on a chair or table next to the computer and set the mic on the keyboard. Finally, it sometimes gives better samples to use a separate mic, and changing the mic location can really help with a stubborn A6 that doesn't want to get a good reading. Negatives have already been mentioned - it's a hassle, it's messy having wires strung all over, and (for mine anyway) it's an extra battery to have to replace regularly. My computer works well with the internal mic, but I still like using my little soundgrabber PZM. The iPAQ is much simpler!
