<html> Hey there Terry, Kawai inner rims are made of Callophyllum  or Matoa.  Both of these are about as dense and hard as hard maple, with Callophyllum being a little harder and more dense.  It's mean and nasty to work with, though. Some outer rims are made with the hardest woods, and others with softer Luan mahogany. Depends on the model and the supply of wood. Kawai concert grands are sometimes made with built up maple rims, but this is not the norm.  Bent Matoa is the most common rim for the EX and GS-100. Don Mannino RPT Kawai America </html>
