<html> Lance, Yes, they can.  The softer ones will eventually develop a flat spot if the piano sits unmoved for an extended period of time, but this can also help prevent the instrument from slipping away from a persuasive performer.  Again, I don't remember if the official Steinway casters come in more than one density.  The harder material will not flaten any time soon, if at all.  The other obvious concern is the type of stem / socket configuration you have:  short stem w/ cast iron socket or long stem w/ stamped socket.
