Should have some views on it by next Monday.</font></div> <div><font face="Arial" color="#000000"><br></font></div> <div><font face="Arial" color="#000000">The Wangaratta 1962 Hamburg Steinway D is just about ready to return to service af ter receiving a sound board cutt-off , a treble cut-off behind the top two treble sections, an extra hardwood back beam to replace the 'bell', (image links can be supplied to those who wish to see them, contact me privately) a new I-rib all Sitka spruce soundboard and a completely revised string scale. The treble scale is my log-style scale from 1992, while the bass scale uses the standard speaking lengths, but has revised components with the trichord notes being changed to bichords. The hitch pin field was modified for all the bichords, so that the back scale lengths are the same for each bichord pair.</font></div> <div><font face="Arial" color="#000000"><br></font></div> <div><font face="Arial" color="#000000">And for the information of S&S, all of the above mentioned modifications are listed on a screen printed label on the sound board for all to see. He told me that Steinway are now flame hardening their capo bars, and that they've been doing it for a couple of years (yes, he asked Hartwig Kalb). We have been doing it since 1995. Last year a Bösendorder representative claimed that my bar hardening procedure was 'experimental'. It was experimental for us back in 1995, and routine ever since. Back in 1995 I was the subject of a huge dummy spit from Steinway, when Werner Husmann claimed in a report that I, "new nothing about Steinway tone building". And now, eight years after giving me a grilling, they're using the same technique to harden their capos. Their publicity department seems to have been remarkably quite on this one. Previously, they claimed to be laser hardening the capos. But the laser hardening was useless. The pianos from that time had grooves in the bars right from new.</font></div> <div><font face="Arial" color="#000000"><br></font></div> <div><font face="Arial" color="#000000">The City Recital Hall here in Sydney received the first Steinway D, to my knowledge, which had the laser hardened bar. I checked this piano as  soon as it arrived. The bars were already grooved from the string aligning process.
