Actually, that was David Andersen who uses the fourths. But on this matter, I did have my Verituner run out of juice the other day, the one day I didn't carry my charger. I had to do a couple of pianos without a device--first time in awhile. It is surprising how alarming it is at first when you are accustomed to working in a particular way. But, like riding a bike, once you get on and start peddling, it all comes back. I was still able to produce a good tuning in an hour or less. Had to do a pitch raise on one of the pianos. That's where you really miss the device. It makes that first pass so much easier and accurate. And even though I felt quite comfortable doing an aural tuning, I don't think I'll leave the charger at home again.

Jonathan, Dave, et al,,,,,,,, I would like to think that having an ETD "go down" would not inhibit any piano technician from continuing in his work. It might be a little more like "work", but if you really can't do it without the machine, then you need a little more education in the tuning art.

Even if I'm using my Accutuner, I'm still listening to intervals as I go. I know I see a lot of people who aren't doing that. I think it was David Love, wasn't it, who said that all his fourths beat about the same? I've been checking this, and yes, you can get a very lovely result with this amount of stretch. Even if you use a machine, one of the last things I do before leaving the piano is to check the seventeenths for smooth progression, any notes that have "slipped" will stick out like a sore thumb.
