at our
holiday cottage on the North Norfolk coast - where the grass was about a =
foot
tall and all the hedges overgrown... a right shambles! Had to come back =
for a
Glyndebourne committment - an on-going irritant when one has a 7 year =
old at
home on holiday! So we're here at base for a week then off again - to =
Verona,
Italy for ten days before returning to North Norfolk. What a round! AT =
70 I get
as much "life" in as I can - you can visualise that, Bob. But enough of =
home
life, back to the "grind". These muting strips are to me a curse to =
manipulate.
I cannot, of course, say that those who use them are wrong so to do! Far =
from it
- if that's the way you feel most at home - most comfortable etc., then =
"go for
it"! I have probably iterated my method of tuning in my many writings to =
"The
List" but suffice it to say my "standard" proceedure for an upright is =
to use
One Papps wedge (only) a Lever with (interchangeable heads) and, for the =
bearing
octave <EM>only</EM>, my <EM>"TLA"</EM> E.T.D. Having laid the bearings, =
checked
the M3 progressions aurally, and made any corrections, I then carry on =
using
just one Papps wedge to the bottom, using 8ves, M10's. Then to the top =
using
8ves, M15's, M17's. Aren't I lucky to be able to stretch that far? :-) =
It's the
same proceedure I use for Grands - except that I use a 'T' hammer =
and one
rubber wedge - the one with the wire handle. All else is the same. This =
way I
<EM>can</EM> tune up to 14 or so school pianos in 7 hours - including =
repairs.
Secret here is that the school pianos are tuned every "term" - that is, =
three
times a year. I make sure they stay at A=440 as well. So that =
regularity makes
the job easier. So don't for goodness sake blow hot and cold over a =
method of
tuning - we each of us have our preferences. No-one is "wrong" and in =
the same
way, no-one is completely in the "right". OK? :-)</FONT></DIV>
