<html> Don, These kinds of cracks in pianos with separately glued outer rims are usually only cosmetic - it will have no affect on the piano at all functionally or tonally.  In addition, they rarely are separated more than a few inches up from the bottom. The best repair I know is to turn the piano over (lid and action removed, etc), mix up some thin epoxy, then use a heat gun to heat the wood and the epoxy so that it will run into the rim quick and deep. Just in case a spot does go all the way through, be sure to protect the floor under the piano!  A drop cloth would be prudent. Inspect it a few hours later, check for sucked-in spots and re-apply if necessary to fill the cracks all the way. Then use a hand held belt sander or a scraper to smooth the bottom of the rim again, and re-paint it with black or brown lacquer to match the original. In all cases of this type of repair I have done over the years in multiple brands, I have yet to hear of any which recurred.  I have also not experienced any tonal affect or tuning stability issues from this problem, so really the repair is only for peace of mind and cosmetics.
