<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>A wound string broke recently on a =
Samick-made
Kohler and Campbell SKG400. The piano was built in 1993 =
according to the
Pierce Atlas, and the customer bought it new about then. Trouble =
is,
this is not the first time a wound string broke. In both cases, =
they
were in the upper end of the bass section, and the notes in question =
weren't
quite up to pitch yet. (No, I was not pitch raising.) =
While tuning
the entire piano, I noticed that all of the strings in the upper bass =
section
felt "uncomfortably tight," and got tighter still the closer I came to =
pitch. A little backing down of tension revealed that the tuning =
pins
felt fine, so I doubt that tuning pin tightness would contribute to =
that
feeling of "discomfort."</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>Is this a characteristic of =
Samick-made
grands from this era? Can I count on other strings in =
that
section breaking the next time I service the piano? Is there a =
remedy to
this? Or am I stuck with replacing the string with a dead match =
that may
break again all too soon?</FONT></DIV>
