I had = to order a new set of cauls from Spurlock to do the job for this unusual = size. We also checked both front and balance rail mortises individually to size = the cloth thickness. Our test indicated the same thickness of cloth, which = made sense since we used the same mortising cauls to size the mortises after steaming out the old. That means the mortises front and center should = have dried to the same opening size. <o:p></o:p> <![if = !supportEmptyParas]> <![endif]><o:p></o:p> Here is the funny part: after bringing the keys back into the = shop I reinserted the final caul in the balance rail to check the fit. Guess what? They = were too loose, all of them, except for a couple of keys. In other words, the = slots had apparently “opened” up since the new cloth had been glued in = 3 days before. What I don’t know is why. Seems like two weeks of drying time = before gluing in the new felt should have been enough. Could it be the consistency of the = hide glue? The batch used was a little thinner than normal. But the front = rail turned out good, so I wouldn’t think that would be it. = <o:p></o:p> <![if = !supportEmptyParas]> <![endif]><o:p></o:p> The moral for me is to be sure to double check the fit of the = final caul before driving 35 miles to the customers place and installing the keys. = <o:p></o:p> <![if = !supportEmptyParas]> <![endif]><o:p></o:p> I briefly considered trying to just steaming the bushing/button = and reinserting the final caul to see if it would close up some so I = wouldn’t have to totally redo it. I was too uncertain about that. I’ve already = steamed out the new felt on the balance rail in preparation to redo it.
