It = will show the level of consistency in the action, and will make sure you have = workable regulating choices. 1 11/16 to 1 7/8 will work, and even 1 = 11/16 will give ample power for most players, so the first place to look is a = blow that will require a dip of around .390-.420. Another clue can be had from = the engagement of the jack and the butt. The leather that the jack pushes = on should be approximately perpendicular to the jack, when at rest. That = allows the jack to slip back under with a minimum of lost motion. If, = on a very slow release of the key, the jack requires more than a tiny bit = of lost motion to get back under the butt, either the blow is longer than = optimal for those parts, or the hammers are too long. Either will force the butt = back too far, creating a "cavity" under the butt that won't let the jack by = without too much lost motion. The action will still work, but this is a clue that = it is not set up as designed. Too many words, but I'm trying to make sure = the description is clear.
