I had a late 70's M last year which hexhibited these traits. Repair involved: Resetting the bass keyframe alignment pin. Shimming the action over Moving underlevers over and correcting the bends in the damper wires Correct the shank length. The customer was ecstatic with the results and wondered why it wasn't like that from the start. I pointed out that early in the assembly process something was misaligned and subsequent assembly procedures "made it work" (compounding mistakes) rather than sending it back to the previous 'station' for correction.   A comedy of errors. It just goes to show that the people in the assembly process may not have the overall scope of how things_should_ work. Their job is to make_it_work. As I've said before, it's a long way from the drawing board to the loading dock.
