He cooks the old dowel dry with a resistance hearing cord (used to thaw frozen water pipes in the "real" world). The desiccated and shrunken dowel is then driven out and a pre-desiccated replacement is driven back in. As the replacement absorbs humidity, it clamps itself in the tube.
