I once had a car which I purchased new and paid extra for an extended
warranty. The differential was defective and died some time after
the manufacturer's warranty was out. The dealer fixed it, and when
I went to pick up the car I was ushered into an office and asked for
proof that I had been servicing the car properly. I had kept good
records and receipts, so I showed my records and the fellow pointed out
that I had gone 6,500 miles between oil changes at one point, and that
invalidates the extended warranty contract. I would have to pay for
the differential repairs, even though changing the engine oil had no
effect whatsoever on the differential at the rear of the car!

I then pulled out my original owner's manual and showed the fellow that
the original factory -recommended oil change interval was 7,500
miles. He was flabbergasted, and had to authorize the
bill.

It's nice to win one once in a while. In that case the requirement
for regular service was specified in the contract I signed when
purchasing the extended warranty, and I had read the fine print. In
the case of product warranties this kind of clause could be put in there,
but most manufacturers wouldn't do that, as it would look bad.
