10.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:navy'>I would assume you are working on a
vertical piano, no? If you have sufficient dip, and your blow =
distance is
not too far, you should have aftertouch (“clunk”). =
Look
carefully at the tip of the jack when the key is fully depressed. =
It
should clear the butt by a clear amount (about 1/16”). See =
if the
hammer has some slight forward movement after the hammer is caught by =
the backcheck
as you go through the final bottoming of the key. This will be =
present if
the regulation is correct. If you don’t have aftertouch, =
decrease
the blow distance (move the hammers closer to the strings) by shimming =
up the
hammer rest rail with punchings or felt and adjusting the capstans to =
remove
lost motion. Check the jack tips to see if they clear the butts, =
and see
if the hammer just moves slightly toward at the end of the key =
stroke. In
a pinch, you can adjust the letoff a little farther away. =
Sometimes a
weak hammer return spring will lessen the “clunk” feeling in =
the
key. Your piano might be ok, but you wouldn’t feel the =
“clunk”.
Strong return springs make a more defined letoff point and aftertouch =
feel.</span></font></p>
