Hi David,
If you lift up at the front rail, the action will tip back a little,
quite frequently that is just enough to ease the connection of frame, and
the dag. The Dag is there to keep the frame down
at forte playing. The frame and dag should be in contact but
not enough to cause any binding. It is important to make sure
that friction at these contact points is kept to a minimum.

First, John didn't say from where he was lifting the action, whether left
or right. I assumed he was lifting at the balance rail, but your
comment seems to assume lifting from the front. John, could you
clarify. Roger, how would lifting in front serve to
"relax" any pressure at the back rail? I trying to
visualize this, but can't. For that matter, could you explain
(probably yet again) how the dag is meant to interface with the back rail
of the action? Is it meant to capture the rail, to force it
down?

Full of curiosity -

did I say, that by lifting very slightly, on the left side of the action,

Hi John,
Lifting very slightly at the front rail will relax a little pressure at
the back rail, This could be the dags causing the problem.
Did you check the back rail/keybed fitting with a long screwdriver at
each action bracket?
Another thing to check. Is the strike point
correct? Steinway's have NO Dag screws. Some times if the
action is too far back, the frame and dag will bind. Adjust
and check.
Because of the bowed front rail, and no Dag screws, the final checks must
always be done with the cheek blocks securely fastened down.
Fitting Steinway key frames, is not always easy. >:-o

Just more food for thought.
Now you really owe me a Dram.
