But last winter I bought a Verituner, and continue to be amazed at how integrated the octaves are. If the goal is a really smooth, controllable tuning, I think the VT is the best product I've tried. It has a short but steep initial learning curve, and is not lightweight. One battery charge will certainly get me through a day's tuning. The CyberTuner is much more visually interesting, and the pitch raise mode gives good results for 1-pass tunings of pianos I've previously tuned. Running on a Pocket PC, I can usually get 2 tunings before the battery warning comes on. You need some sort of battery extender pack to make it viable in the field. And a Pocket PC is definitely geared for a young person's eyesight (I need my reading glasses). The SATs are extremely durable, and with 2-4 weeks between battery charges, win that contest hands-down. They are very reliable, and probably the best instrument for measuring and research. But they construct a tuning from 2 partials each of 3 notes; the CyberTuner uses multiple partials from 5 or 6 notes, automatically recorded, but then tunes following only one set of partials at a time; the Verituner automatically uses multiple partials from every note in the first 7 octaves in constructing the tuning and also the readout is amalgamating several of the partials of the note as it is being tuned. A graph of a Verituner tuning is not smooth, but the aural result sure is. My 1200 cents (x 7+1/3) worth. I'm looking at the SAT, Cybertuner, and Verituner. What are your experiences with these, which do you prefer, and why. I've used an SAT I for 12 years, and I'm wondering if the newer devices do give a better tuning.
