Brenau University has a Steinway 45 upright, #385559, (1963?) that had
developed a lot of false beats in the treble. I have reseated the strings, etc, but
have not been able to eliminate the false beats. With the age and use on it,
will the only solution be to restring it?

Before restringing the whole instrument, pick one of the worst notes with
false beats and put a new string on. If the false beats are still there, you will
know the problem is not the strings but something else.

Besides tapping the strings on the bridge, have you tapped the strings down
on the v-bar? Have you voiced the hammers? Have you looked for imperfection
son the speaking length of the string, especially near the termination points.
If there are small kinks in the wire, you can eliminate them by rubbing them
with a brass rod.
