Hi, Define equal temperment. If the definition includes all intervals of a particular class being the same size, and beat rates on all classes increasing evenly from A0 to C88, then it is impossible to create an ET. Inharmonicity varies with humidity and the barometric pressure. Clearly there is no easy way to control barometric pressure. That's one reason (of many) that "canned" tunings rarely are sufficient. There is, for example, a trend to lower FAC numbers when the same piano is tuned on a regular periodic basis. ETD's are a time saver and a tool. The best of them appear to create fairly smooth beat rates weighted towards a particular partial. Let's not forget that the lowly unison apparently defeats *all* the EDT's (that I have tried). I would prefer not be without my ETD. Napoleon would have liked me as an officer. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus.
