Hi Don,

It will remain constant because it is causing a vibration/pitch within the
single string which beats against the "basic/fundamental/root/whatever"
frequency of the string, no matter what the pitch of the string in question.
While that rate may change slightly with tension adjustments/pitch, it will
be almost imperceptible in the range of normal pitch adjustment. It's true
that the false beat will also change in relation to the pitch of another
string, it is much less discernable, since the internal beating of the
string is most prominent.

At least that's my not-so-humble opinion :-) , and my observations seem to
bear it out. However, don't take my word for it, but try it out on a unison
with a clean string next to a wild one. No matter which string you choose
to move, you will hear the two frequencies move in out of phase, while the
false beat speed will remain relatively constant.

Otto
