It is..and if it wasn't for the break being in that exact location, I 
may still be looking for the problem. I actually stumbled onto the 
problem quite by accident..by thinking that the screw holding the damper 
wire was loose..and while I was tightening the screw(not loose), I found 
the problem.

That's the easy part..I can tell you exactly what is wrong..my problem 
is the solution to the problem..which appears to be asking for more trouble.
