Lance, Joe's idea works great. The exact sequence depends on whether the new lid is fully assembled with the lock bar, or if it is in separate pieces. - Assemble both sides of the butt hinges with the pin on the piano, and place some thick cardboard under the top part of the hinge (between the rim top and the hinge) to hold it level. Place double-sided tape on the hinge where it meets the lid. - Place some kind of spacing material on top of the rim (wood blocks, cardboard, etc) to keep the lid off of the double sided tape when you first place the lid on the piano. - Place the lid in position, and adjust the alignment. Double check the position of the lid, and the front lid flap while open and closed. - Once you are confident of the lid position, check it again - walk all the way around, look at it from a distance, and check all overhangs. - When you are really sure it is in the right place, remove your spacers to allow the lid to rest on the double-taped hinges. - Remove the hinge pins from the butt lid hinges - Gently raise the lid at the hinges, using a thin strip of wood (or similar) to pry up on the upper part of the hinge to keep it stuck to the lid and separate it from the lower half of the hinge. - Once the hinges are disengaged, lift off the lid and turn it over. Pre-drill small pilot holes at the center of the hinge screw holes - Remove the hinges and double-sided tape, drill the screw holes and install the hinges. If the lid is sent with front lid and lock bar in place, you will need to fiddle around with the whole assembly quite a while to be sure everything lines up OK. If the lock bar is separate you can simply align it with the stretcher first and use the double-sided tape to locate it for drilling. If the front lid is not assembled, I would suggest that you fasten it to the rear lid before locating the butt hinges. It will help you to get the whole thing aligned properly with the piano sides with equal overhangs and all. When it arrives, it must be "fitted". I was wondering if anyone has experience with this. The lid must be aligned to the lock, then marked for screw locations for the hinges. How does one go about accurately doing this? I also have an old Baldwin needing new hinges (exact original dimensions not available) and I need to do basically the same thing. Thanks in advance.
