Wim, I'm guessing you mean the key slip, not the front rail which is part of the key frame. If cosmetics is not an issue, and the pins that keep it in place (attached to the bottom of the key slip and fitting in holes in the keybed) are doing their job, a screw from the front of the key slip going into the keyblock would work. I've never done it myself, but have seen it. If you figure it correctly, you could use the screw holes that are already there, the ones holding the screws that fit into the mortises that are now too damaged to hold them. I would rather do it this way than putting screws in from underneath the keybed. You'd need at least three and then you'd have 5 screws between you and the action as opposed to four by using the keyblocks. Of course best would be to repair the mortises, but that may be more time than you have to spend on it.
