Ditto Ed's comment on cosmetics, even if you don't think it matters.

(just a minute... checking my records...)

Back in '86, I replaced a key-bed/frame/set in a '60s vintage 243 console 
[due to roof leak in practice room].  The method of attaching the keyslip 
had changed and I decided to do your idea of running a screw straight into 
the cheek.  I even used a brass conical washer w/brass screw.

It's worked well, but I've never been happy with the look. ...and this is a 
blond oak beastie!
