Don,

Try White Lube ( metal on metal ) or Ivory Soap ( wood on wood; wood on
metal; felt on wood; felt on felt ).
It's the cheapest and best for the kind of squeaks just listed. 
Yes, LONG term results are good.
It may require disassembly for adequate results.  Worth the effort.
Make sure all parts are good, and no rubbing anywhere.
Should be yearly maintenance item.
Try it.  You'll like it.
