IMMH(?)O, I find just the opposite. I've scorched more whenever I've tried 
butane things. Like Jon, I pass the flame most of the way from hammer to 
knuckle. That way it spreads the twist over a longer distance.

BTW, just for fun, I did a 90° twist on one shank.  No idea of longevity, 
however. It burned nicely in my fireplace...;-}
