[CAUT] Thumping Baldwin SF and Bechstein C

Hi Shelley,
That's an odd thing to say, "kerf the back rail with a wedge of
veneer." Hard to interpret just exactly what she means. Saw a kerf
where, and in what direction? If the rail is somewhat warped, high in
the middle, you can saw a kerf or a few on the bottom of the rail
(Yamaha and Kawai do this on the bottom of the front rail, the kerf
extending not quite to the front edge of the rail) which will allow
the rail to "relax" into position. And you could wedge material into
such kerfs. If what is high is the treble and/or bass ends, you would
kerf the top of the rail, same sort of thing. An exacto saw is good
for this. Cut maybe halfway through the rail.
If it is a matter of the whole back rail slightly high, and bouncing
against the keybed, you could glue a strip of very thin veneer to the
bottom of the back rail. The kind of veneer you get with a very thin
paper backing, maybe 1 mm thick. But you want to think hard and
examine things before doing something like that, experiment with
something like masking tape first. And look at the balance rail and
how it interacts.
