Sounds like you are on the right track. Now that you have some people treating you with some consideration, it may be time to start differentiating between those folks who are acting (and treating you) professionally and those who have yet to learn. I don't know about other CAUTs, but the analogy for me is to child-rearing: you do get a second chance, but people who put me in bad positions due to their habitual negligence just don't get the same "bend-over-backwards" responsiveness from me as those who "behave" most of the time. While we all prefer the carrot, if there is no stick, the carrot ceases to have any meaning. My stick may take the form of, "Oh, gosh, I wish I could help you out, but it just isn't possible on such short notice this time." YMMV. Done that! Bummer, eh? Those artsy folks.... very tunnel visioned! ( or should I say...self absorbed!) I've mentioned this several times, with no avail. A few faculty have caught on; like the oboe professor who just emailed me about something in April....I'm very impressed! Harpsichord involved too! I'm a happy guy! This took 2 years to grow! Who knows...in 30 years I'll have half of them "conditioned"!! How 'bout making sure, politely but firmly, that all concerned are aware that such short notice rocks your world, but because of your close association with the artists, you will rearrange your life to accommodate them, THIS time... Hopefully they will get the picture that you deserve profuse thanks and appreciation, a cookie AND your R.I.H. (reward in heaven). Although this may seem like blowing your horn, if you don't speak up, why in the world should they give you more advance notice in the future? Today's full!! I know now I'll have to come in at 6am. (I know.. boo hoo for me..I picked the job :>) I remember many times in the private world where wealthy folks throwing a huge Christmas party with hired pianist....and forget to get the piano tuned until a day or two beforehand...but this is rediculous! The Lied Center is a professional concert venue and they should know that I'm not there at the drop of a hat. What do they think I do...just sit around and write e-mails to my collegues?!?!?! This is a really nice Steinway B...but I haven't tuned it for two months! Maybe 5:30am would be a better idea? What have you folks done in these situations? Thanks for advice...
