[CAUT] sohmer damper spring noise

Has anyone encountered a Sohmer 455K vertical where the damper springs ride in unfelted grooves? I just worked on one and the springs were creaking audibly in the grooves when the pedal was depressed. I tried graphite pencil, but this seemed to wear off after several cycles of the damper lever. On closer examination, the springs had dug right through the graphite paint, ultimately riding on tiny spots of raw wood. My first thought was to apply the usual felt pads, but how to make it stick reliably to the Dag?
