[CAUT] Capacitive Duractance

I want to thank Nevin for providing the You Tube! I saw it years ago, and could never find it again-it's one of my all time favorites. Everyone on the Caut list should try to see this if possible-it really breaks the tension with all the "amplifier" stuff! Thanks to all--as everyone's opinion is valuable, even when we are wrong. Also, a note to all who still want to think of a soundboard as an amplifier: If it helps you to think of it that way, that's ok--just please try to keep it in your own mind and stop trying to change the minds of "the greats" who have been piano "engineers and pioneers" for so many more years than most of us.

Our next topic should be on: CAPACITIVE DURACTANCE!!! (hillarious)

I don't know whether they know what they are talking about or not. Considering
the state of Baldwin's manufacturing just now, however, might cause one to
wonder.

Marketing literature (or whether in print or online) is generally not the most
reliable source for technical information. During my time at Baldwin I had
several "discussions" with marketing people over things that appeared in print.
In most cases marketing flourish won out over technical accuracy.

Not to continue a very very long and over winded discourse, but I read this last
week.

>From the Baldwin Piano Co. website:

"Meticulously constructed and tapered, Baldwin soundboards amplify the string
energy to produce a rich, sustaining tone."

I guess they don't know what they are talking about, according to you and they
build the pianos.

Oh, and where does resonance come in to the equation? It seems to me the
board is resonating to the frequencies set up by the energy imparted to
the string under tension.

Further enlightenment is required by our local gurus.
