David, I'm busted! ;>) A prominent ( in her mind) artist from NYC came in 2 years ago and hated the piano. (perfectly tuned - mind you...) We fussed about a bit, then I moved the piano 3" to the left.... "What a big difference!... I like it now!!", she said... I and the stage manager smiled and agreed that moving it that small amount must have affected the tone in the hall just the right amount!!" Polish the music desk, wipe off a key or two, chopstick voice one hammer, ....just look busy for 15 minutes...will please them! They just want to know that they're specail! ( Some are very insecure...) so the extra (maybe nothing) effort you perform is just what they want!! Just look busy..... Of course there is the simple solution for the 442 request--just tell them you did it. Confess now, how many have listened to someone complain that "this note just doesn't sound right", and so you futz around a bit, scratch your leg, blow your nose and tell them to try it again only to hear, "ah yes, now that's perfect". A formerly high panel compression soundboard that's right on the ragged edge of function will sometimes sound better at a higher pitch, but there's nothing inherently different about designing for 440, or 443. > 2) Are there negative structural impacts ascribable to frequent changing > of underlying pitch? They're listening to the guy who ordered 442, instead of to the music. > 5) In the age of AUTO-TUNE, (to quote Joy Behar - or at least her SNL > parody) "So what? Who cares?" Someone's ego cares.
