[CAUT] Jeanie's brain storm - was Boston changed to dealers...

I've been watching this whole discussion with great interest from a school
point of view. As part of our curriculum, we offer "new piano preparation"
as a serious topic. It is not brand specific, but reaches out to the most
common variations that exist, and which are not significant enough to
dilute the general principles and activities of new piano prep. This is an easy
syllabus. It is not something that can be taught to a rank beginner, a
student in the first, or even second quarter of the curriculum. There is
necessary grounding for the principles to be understood, and the sequences of
activities to make sense. The opposite posture, and what we have responded to,
is reflective of the dealers' wont to hire the newest and cheapest
technical help to "prep" pianos from the crate to the floor, and to follow through
in aftercare.

Personally, I think it's many years overdue to ditch the
presumption that acceptable technical skills are piano brand
specific. Shouldn't any competent tech be able to prep a new
*anything* without a specific manufacturer's certification?
I'm told that over half the PTG membership has never attended,
that's *never*, a national convention. I don't understand how
manufacturers pressuring their dealers will get the cheapest
tuners the dealer can find into any sort of training program
when they won't attend the training already offered them.

Just my perspective.
