The product was "Scott's Liquid Gold - Mod Control 500" I think the 500 refers to 500 square feet of cleaning. It is a box with a 2 part mixture from ACE Hardware and was not with the rest of the regular mold cleaners. I found the piano had been refinished and not the original finish and the mildew was not so bad. I cleaned with Murphy's and will go stronger in need be. But the piano doesn't have a shellac finish. It's a lacquer finish. Ask him if the mold products he has can be used on that. What product did he give you to use on shellac? It is actually 2 Steinways I need to work on, one is almost sitting in the ocean in a summer cottage (Mansion) and the other one is in a house which has been remodeled and just the piano needs cleaning. The dude at the hardware store didn't want me to use any bleach product on an old shellac finish. So I've got something else to try. I'll let you know how it works out. Bleach, to my understanding, is the only way that I know of to kill mold. If you use a product that has bleach in it, won't it affect the finish of the piano? Isn't there another way to kill mold on piano parts without challenging conventional wisdom about bleach and piano finishes? -John Parham Hickory, NC > -------- Original Message -------- > Subject: Re: [CAUT] Cleaning old mold > From: wimblees at aol.com > Date: Sat, August 29, 2009 7:05 pm > To: caut at ptg.org > Ruth > The "mold remover" products you buy at the hardware store contain bleach. I've had pretty good success using one of those products. I don't know if I would vacuum the mold. It will stick to the inside of the vacuum hose, and you'll wind up with the stuff all over your car, or where ever you store your vacuum cleaner. > Willem (Wim) Blees, RPT > Piano Tuner/Technician > Mililani, Oahu, HI > 808-349-2943 > Author of: > The Business of Piano Tuning available from Potter Press > www.pianotuning.com <http://www.pianotuning.com/> > -----Original Message----- > From: Ruth Van Dine <Ruth at VanDineDesign.com> > To: caut at ptg.org > Sent: Sat, Aug 29, 2009 11:18 am > Subject: [CAUT] Cleaning old mold > Hi, > I need to clean old mold out of a 1940 ebony Steinway. I've heard to just vacuum off the old mold, clean it with a mild detergent solution, rinse & dry. Also noted that bleach is not the solution to use. > > Is this about right?? > > Ruth > > Ruth Van Dine, RPT > 62 Stokes St, Warwick RI 02889 > 401-921-2456 > www.RuthsPiano.com <http://www.ruthspiano.com/> > -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
