We could make "trees" of shanks somehow with sliced up hammer felt as "flowers". I'll work on some sort of design. Maybe there's some side income at Christmas street fairs or something.....But, you're right. when is there time unless your retired? Richard West, are you reading???? ;>) (I don't think he's ever going to retire!) Got too busy, and the moment passed. Maybe this year... On Wed, Sep 16, 2009 at 4:27 PM, Paul T Williams < pwilliams4 at unlnotes.unl.edu> wrote: That keyboard art is really cool! Thanks for sharing. I have made interesting "arrangements" of de-strung piano wire with good coils in tact like a flower bouquet. My mother-in-law has one in a vase in her home. I'm thinking of making a Christmas wreath out of hammers/shanks for this holiday season...painted red, of course! Go Huskers! Maybe green knuckles.....Also made a keychain from a 1890 Steinway upright hammer (no shank) Have fun everyone! I also pop the hammer heads off the shanks and give them to students for their keychains, they love 'em! -Zeno Wood On Wed, Sep 16, 2009 at 2:12 PM, Paul T Williams < pwilliams4 at unlnotes.unl.edu> wrote: Does everyone out there simply throw out your worn out action parts? I have done so for years. until today. I just finished installing new hammers and shanks on a practice room grand. I took the old parts, put them in a box, put it outside the door of my shop with a sign saying,"Free Steinway Hammers". It's been about an hour, and most of them are now gone! I heard lots of students talking about it and searching for certain numbers like 21,22,23 etc. probably their ages. Just thought it would be a fun experiment....and it's working.
