[CAUT] cutting departments

We are beginning a 13 million addition/renovation to our Fine Arts
Building which houses Music and the Visual and Theatre Arts Departments.
This weekend we traded in some uprights for 6 Steinway uprights and two
Steinway Bs (one was a trade-in and the second was an outright gift to
the department from a donor) from money donated to the University for
that purpose. Unfortunately the state doesn't have the funds...no
raises for the last 5 years, no bonus this year (mine amounted each year
to around $200 but that's better than nothing...not this year). Our
music major enrollment jumped from 85 last year to 110 this year. In
the West Tennessee area there are more and more UTM graduates teaching
in public schools and we have a number of graduates doing further study
in their major instruments at graduate schools. Maybe rural West
Tennessee is slow to feel the effects of negative trends.

On the flip side, Governor Bredesen advocated a 3-year Bachelor's
degree, cut down from a 4-year degree, but he's a business man and
doesn't understand higher education and what's involved in a
well-rounded baccalaureate degree. He doesn't know what he's talking
about and will soon be out of office!

Joy!

The enrollment in music departments is on the rise, as is the
construction of new music facilities in a variety of locations. Is that
a counter-trend?
