Alan,

This is just him, so maybe he'll bea bit more kind to the piano!~ We'll never know until I tell youall Wednesday morning!!

Thanks for the help and warnings! Avery very solid tuning is whats in store for him, but then again, that'swhat I do! <G> that's my forte. I'm still getting the greatdetails on all this other advice from y'all on rebuilding and regulatingstuffs, and thank you all muchly! You all mean a lot to me.

Tuning has always been my forte. EvenMacolm Bilson, on our fortepiano, told me that "you are one of maybe5 tuners in the world that I would have tune my own fortepiano!" Nicecomplement, but I'm still waiting for the call LOL Felt goodto hear this though. Perhaps it was the glass of Merlot we shared afterhis concert!

Perhaps I should teach a class sometimeat National, but then again, maybe I'm full of @#$% or at least my egois!~!!!

Best,
Paul

Ron, 48 point? Huh? Just 12 point plaintext on my machine.

Paul,

Anyway Feltsman asked for it to be a bit brighter in the mid to upper treble.I had already reshaped the top two section to get a bit more focus, butI wasn’t about to add any juice. Not that these hammers would take anymore juice anyway. But I did pound those hammers a bit with the back endof my weighted voicer. It brought it up a tad.

I have been wondering if he actually went out into the hall to listen. This is a 1700 seat hall with great acoustics (a wonderfully restored artdeco hall). I was sitting in the loge, though there is not a bad seat inthe house. So I wondered if he was concerned about cutting through theorchestra so that he could hear himself, or whether he was worried aboutbeing heard through the orchestra out in the hall (no problem with thatpiano in that hall).

Good luck Paul.

Alan

Alan, thanks for the alert on Feltzman!!

I hope it goes well also!, Maybe he should have listened to moreRubenstein! If he wants it lower, the only thing we can do is take thepiano off the piano truck...Lord, I pray he doesn't want that! This pianohas lots of power, but is not bright at all. I will not/nor can not"make it brighter" in one afternoon ;>) We've got it justthey way we want it, so it'll have to do. On the downside, this willmake him pound harder to get the sound he thinks is good.

Not looking forward to this one, sadly. On a bright note, Jon Nakamatsuis coming soon ...Great guy and easily pleased.

Thanks (I think), for the tips....and..er..warning.

Best,
Paul

Ted and Larry and Ann, heads up for this one! Read the warning below...

Hi Paul,

Mr Feltsman has come and gone. He plays too hard for my taste, but he didn’tbreak any strings. His Brahms 2nd was a powerful, but not a sensitive interpretation. He was here a few years ago and I would say the same thing about his Tchaikovsky2nd. Listening to that concert from the second row I wondered if the pianowould be left in a heap of rubble after he was done (lesson learned fromthat one - never again sit so close to the piano for a piano concerto).I wouldn’t characterize it as abusive; just hard and heavy playing. Helikes a bright piano and he likes a low sitting position. We had a spareset of legs, which I shortened by one inch for him. Being a short guy Ihad to bring out the other bench while I tuned the piano. Way too low forme.

Good luck. I hope it goes well.

Alan

Funny you should mention this. I’ll be working with Vladimir Feltsmantomorrow night. But, whew, for us he’s playing only one concerto– Brahms 2nd. He’s always interesting. Worth stressing over, I think.Good luck and enjoy the concert.

Yes, Susan, I get overly anxious about these things when so many otherthings are happening at the same time. Feltzman is at Lied next week, using all 3 of their grands...Two B's and the D over there for master classes, practice and performance. There is also the student grad and undergradconcerto competitions happening Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday-using 2 pianostuned together each night. My favorite DMA student has a performanceTuesday eve on this new Steinway project, the same night as Feltzman. I'mnot freaking out over one piano, but 6. So, I'm not stressing out aboutjust one performance! You can understand the pressure, I'm sure. It's not as bad as our Liszt Fest last spring with our central west regionalconference was happening and to top it all off, my father in law passingaway all the same week, but it's close. This kind of stuff happensabout twice per year. The rest of the time, I'm pretty laid backand unstressed.

Paul

Have you ever noticed that so often we tend to run on anxiety, fightingdeadlines, as if something is crucial, but in retrospect, all "FAILURE" would mean was that someone would play an accompaniment on a BaldwinD which was not a bad piano either?

You know, every time we stress ou
