The current U-1 has a longer music shelf thingy. Still not ideal (students complain about how it doesn't hold photocopies well for one thing, and the constant loose screws on that design drive me crazy), but I have been happy with the model in general. We have maybe 10 from the 70s, a mixed bag, and 6-8 from late 90s through present, all nice. I agree with those who have mentioned Kawai K-3 (just bought one this fall, very nice), and I would add UST-9 for a studio - beefed up from the 7 and 8, a nice institutional design. I haven't had a chance to try too many makes because of our current dearth of dealerships, but I have been impressed like Jim Busby with Hailun, from the ones I saw at conventions, should you want to look at Chinese. Higher end Samick product is also worth a look.
