Another good history book is The Piano from The New Grove Musical Instrument Series. It basically is a reprint of various articles about the piano found in The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. The book includes chapters on the history of the piano, piano playing, pianists, piano music, a glossary of terms and an index of makers. The history chapter has a number of great diagrams and pictures of various actions and pianos. Derek Gibson
